Phoenix is Valencia College's Annual Student Literary and Arts Magazine, featuring artwork, poetry, and fiction created by students. The content is chosen and edited by the student editorial team, who decide the theme for the issue. This volume's theme was STELLAR. The student design team, of which I was a part of, then brainstorm and conceptualize the best way to embody the theme throughout the magazine.
To bring the concept of STELLAR to life, we started by doing word associations and researching things related to space. Each team member brought in inspirational pieces/pictures, which we used to solidify the overall mood. Minimalism, negative space, and clean lines were chosen to create a modern, yet futuristic aesthetic and to represent the feeling of starkness and isolation one might feel in space. Humans are composed of the same elements that make up stars. Stars, like humans, also have a life-cycle, and go through different phases in their lifetimes. To commemorate the parallels to humanity, and the themes of the artwork and literature, the sub-sections of the magazine were named after the different stages of the stars: Nebula, Supernova, and Black Hole.
