The Yale School of Art is the art school of Yale University, located in New Haven, CT. Founded in 1869 as the first professional fine arts school in the US, it awards Masters of Fine Arts degrees to students completing a two-year course in photography, graphic design, painting/ printmaking, or sculpture. The School of Art, however, is NOT part of the Yale Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and has it’s own application process. US News & World’s 2012 and 2013 rankings rated Yale first in the US for its Masters of Fine Arts programs.
The actual Yale School of Art website is a module-based wiki that is editable by every current graduate student, staff person, and faculty member, though certain areas, like course descriptions, are locked/cannot be edited by everybody.
The website frequently features moving GIFs in the background, default fonts, and garish color schemes. The majority of people consider it to be terrible, but the type of art students they want to attract will interpret it as funny and avant-garde. Regardless, the website is not organized well, making it hard to navigate and find information. I wanted to create a design that would make everything organized and easy to use, while maintaining the artistic, avant-garde spirit.
